Mrs Gaskell's biography was begun in 1885, at the suggestion of Ellen Nussey and Rev Brontë. It was published in 1857 by Smith, Elder & Company.

An impending law-suit by Mrs Lydia Robinson – now Lady Scott – over the revelations of her relationship with Branwell led to the first edition being withdrawn.

Following the Cowan Bridge controversy, some passages were removed from the third edition of the book, and others were added in support of Carus Wilson.
