General Notes on Sowerby Bridge

The town of Sowerby Bridge lies to the west of Halifax, where the river Ryburn joins the Calder.

Before incorporation as an Urban District in the 1850s the area occupied by the town was divided between the townships of Sowerby, Norland, Warley and Skircoat. Their boundaries are the Calder and Ryburn rivers, and by the Warley Clough stream which now runs under the road where Bolton Brow meets Wharf Street.

The valley-bottom town gets its name from the bridge – mentioned in 1314 – which was erected over the river, and was originally the crossing point for traders from the older Sowerby which stands on the hillside to the west. This is now known as the County Bridge.

A stone bridge is mentioned in 1517.

In the late 18th/early 19th century, the busy canal basin served as a trans-shipment point between the Calder & Hebble Navigation and the Rochdale Canal. The main items carried by the barges included raw wool, cloth, coal, stone, corn and lime. The basin is now used for pleasure craft.

On 18th July 1962, a Local Government Commission proposed that the built-up area of Sowerby Bridge should merge with Halifax and the rest of Sowerby Bridge with Hebden-Hepton Rural District Council

The Albert Wood Lock was opened in 19??, and the two waterways were linked once again on 3rd May 1996 after extensive works on the Tuel Lane link tunnel under the main road.
