During World War II, he enlisted [October 1940] and served as a Pilot Officer with the 73rd Squadron with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

He died 26th May 1942.

He was buried at Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya [Grave Ref 8 D 15].

He is remembered on a memorial in Mount Zion Methodist Church, Mytholmroyd and Scout Road Wesleyan Chapel, Mytholmroyd, in the book Royd Regeneration, on the Memorial at Hebden Bridge United District Secondary School, and on the Memorial at Mytholmroyd Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School.

His brother Walter also died in the War

He taught Science & Physical Education in Enfield.

In [Q1] 1938, he married Doris J. N. Gosling in Surrey.

During World War II, he served as a Pilot Officer with the 152nd Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

He was killed in action [23rd September 1940] (aged 26)  flying his Spitfire in the Battle of Britain.

His body was never recovered from the Channel.

In January 2011, he, Kenneth Manger and Geoffrey Garside were commemorated when Manger Gardens, Garside Drive and Beaumont Chase, on the Wheatley Chase development at Keighley Road, Halifax, were named in their honour.

Sarah died at BrookFoot and was buried at St Martin's Church, Brighouse [14th September 1849].

In 1851, the widowed William and daughter Mary were living with his parents at Elland Upper Edge.

On 24th July 1851, he married (2) Elizabeth Hargreaves [1825-1893] at Halifax Parish Church.
