The Halifax Evening Courier [7th March 1925] reported
John William Bower appeared at Skipton Police Court today,
charge with shop-breaking at Skipton.
Bower had been arrested in connection with the daring theft of
jewellery on the evening of 29th January last at the shop
of Messrs Thomas Fattorini Limited, Caroline Square, Shipton.
On that night, a man drove up to the shop in a two-seater car, and,
having broken the window without leaving his seat, seized and
decamped with a tray of ladies' diamond rings, valued at over
£1,000
The Halifax Daily Courier & Guardian [6th April 1925] published
an account of the trial at the West Riding Quarter Sessions at
Wakefield.
After the Skipton robbery, he drove off in the direction of Bolton
Abbey.
In the neighbourhood of Bolton Abbey, he threw away the tray
containing the rings.
At the same time, he inadvertently threw away his trilby hat.
In the lining of the hat was found a hotel bill with the prisoner's
name, connecting the man to the robbery.
He also admitted to three others in the west of England.
He had hurled pepper and ammonia at shop assistants to carry out his
designs.
He was stated to be an ex-service man and a deserter.
The sentence passed upon him was four years' penal servitude
