In 1901, Harry and his brother Joe were staying with Fred & Ellen Mitchell at 14 Doncaster Street, Salterhebble.

On 26th October 1904, he enlisted in Royal Navy for 12 years.

Joe left home to go to short-time school at Copley in company with another lad named Luke Stubbins. As they were going along the canal bank, Barstow climbed up a tree from which he accidentally fell and rolled down the bank into the water. The companion ran to a man named James Barstow working in an adjoining field who got the lad out, but he was dead

Samuel died 15th October 1916.
