Cow Green, Halifax

Cow Green is an area of Halifax town centre near to Bull
Green, and Swine Market.
It was formerly as Halifax Green.
This was the original site of the Gibbet before it was moved to the
present position on Gibbet Hill.
The first Methodist preaching room in Halifax was opened
at Cow Green in 1749.
The meetings were popular and in 1752, a small chapel was opened in
Church Lane.
The Halifax Winter Cattle Fair was held at Cow Green until it was
moved to the Victoria Cattle Market in Gibbet Street in 1856/1858.
The road was widened in 1971 when buildings on the west side were
demolished
