Cragg Vale
Contents:
Cragg Vale is a district of Calderdale south of Mytholmroyd
and up to Blackstone Edge.
It is about 9 miles from Halifax, and 3 miles from Hebden Bridge.
In the Middle Ages, there was a Norman deer park here.
The district had a thriving iron-smelting industry.
It was originally known as Turvin Valley.
The stream – known variously as Cragg Brook, Turvin Clough,
and Elphin Brook – flows through the valley.
There were many cotton mills here owned by the Hinchliffe
family, the Sutcliffe family, the Greenwood family,
and others.
From the 18th century, the area was best known as being home to the
Cragg Vale Coiners.
