The Todmorden Advertiser & Hebden Bridge Newsletter [24th May 1895] published An extensive article entitled The Fighting on the Indian Frontiera letter from a Walsden man, which mentions Thomas and his account of campaign in the Malakand Pass and the Swat river engagements in India.

Thomas died at Chitral, India [4th July 1895] (aged 21).

The Todmorden & District News [2nd August 1895] reported his death

It is stated on what is regarded as reliable authority, that Tom Furness (21), son of Mr Hiram Furness, 4 Pellon-street, Walsden, died from enteric fever on the 4th July.

Furness took part in three engagements in the Chitral Expedition, thereby earning a medal and two bars. His regiment, the 2nd Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, was well to the front throughout.

He was a young man of splendid physique and excellent promise. He joined the army three years ago, and in September last was over on furlough; as soon as he returned to his regiment at York he volunteered to go out to India.

The news of his death lacks confirmation from the War Office, and we would fain hope that it may prove to be incorrect, though we have no grounds whatever for doubting it
