It emerged that Halliday had been working his hands 10 hours
and 5 minutes per day, contrary to the Act.
In Halliday's defence, it was stated that the hands had agreed
to start work 5 minutes earlier each morning and then stop work
half-an-hour earlier on the Saturday.
The Bench held that the Act had been infringed, and
fined Halliday 19/- in each case plus costs, a total of
£9 10/-

On 16th August 1869, Richard's body was found in Spindle Mill Dam, Ovenden.
The Halifax Courier [21st August 1869] reported
the inquest at the Ovenden Cross Inn
Mrs Halliday said that her husband (deceased) had drank freely
of late, and had been in a melancholy state.
Witness, who was sleeping at her house, she being ill, returned to
her own home at seven o'clock on Monday morning, and found the door
locked, and the key outside.
On entering, her husband was not there.
He was subject to fits, but had been very cheerful on the preceding
day, Sunday.
Joseph Kitchingman deposed that, as he was returning home at a
quarter to six on Monday evening, he saw deceased's body in the dam
of Spindle Mill, Old-lane.
With assistance he got out the body, and afterwards fetched the
police.
There were no marks of violence on the body.
Verdict: Found drowned
