He was a brace weaver [1891] / in business as a painter & paperhanger (1901) at 105 Haley Hill,  Halifax / a ladies hairdresser.

He was a keen amateur artist. He is believed to have painted the altar scenes for St Bernard's RC Church at Range Bank but these were destroyed by a fire in 1913.

In 1898, he married Emma Varley in Halifax.

In 1907, the family emigrated to the USA with the rest of the Horsfall family They did not return to Britain with the others in 1908.

By 1910, they had established themselves in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Cleveland Township, and Albert was working as a painting contractor. He also continued working as an artist and completed hundreds of paintings which are now distributed amongst his descendants spread across the USA.

Emma died in 1958 [aged 82].

Albert died in 1964 [aged 89].

There are many local examples of his work: Bolton Brow Wesleyan Sunday School, Elland Town Hall, The Gables, Norland, Ripponden Conservative Club, Saint Augustine's Vicarage, Halifax and The vicarage of Saint John the Evangelist, Warley.

He was a member of the Institute for Chemistry, the Institute for Electrical Engineering and the Institute for Microscopy.

He was interested in wireless telegraphy, and it was said that he might have preceded Guglielmo Marconi - with whom he corresponded – if he had devoted more time to the subject.

In 1914, he co-wrote a report on the treatment of Consumption, Pneumonia, Diphtheria and other inflammatory diseases

He took over from his stepmother Sarah as landlord of the Bowling Green, Skircoat [1905, 1911, 1928].

He was known for probity with which he kept the pub. Women were not encouraged to drink in the pub. He did not tolerate drunkenness amongst his customers. He banned all games from being played on the premises.

He never married.

He died at Heathroyde Nursing Home [13th April 1928] (aged 73 years). and was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 865] with his parents.

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £2,372. Probate was granted to solicitor Lewis Irving Dey, and widow Jessy Greenwood.

On 15th August 1883,
Joseph Fletcher and Grace were drinking at the Bay Horse, Halifax.

He attempted to take liberties with her and struck her. She left and when she tried to return Fletcher tried to prevent her and pushed her. She fell down 2 steps, striking her head on the causeway, and was unconscious and remained so until she died a week later.

Fletcher was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour

In June 1875, she and
Barker Smith were remanded at Todmorden Court House, charged with stealing 2 pieces of cotton shirting from the shop of James Gaukroger, Pavement and 2 boxes of scents from Messrs Newton & Brook's shop, next door.

They were committed for trial at Salford Quarter Sessions, where Horsfall was sentenced to 3 months' imprisonment with hard labour, and Smith was sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment with hard labour.

On 17th November 1879, she was sentenced to 2 month's imprisonment for fortune-telling. A woman employed by the police visited her and she pretended to give information about a young man whom she wanted to marry.

Hannah had already previously convicted for fortune-telling.

He died of shrapnel wounds to the stomach [7th June 1917].

The Todmorden & District News [22nd June 1917] reported his death

Private Horsfall, RAMC, reported sick on the 23rd of April 1919 and was found to be suffering from influenza, with a temperature of 101° rising to 104° later in the day.

Two days later, he developed pneumonia with considerable abdominal distension.

He became gradually worse, and died at 10 am on 27th April

 

He was buried at St Paul's Church, Cross Stone [Old part D 52].

Private J. W. Horsfall, RAMC, died at the 21st Southgate General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham.

The military funeral left the hospital for New Street station at 9:45 am on Tuesday week. The band of the RAMC played the Funeral March as the coffin, on which were laid numerous wreaths from officers and men, was taken to the station.

The medical officers, NCOs and men of the hospital followed, and great respect was shown all along the route.

As the train moved out the Funeral March was again played, the ceremony being conducted with full military honours throughout

Rifleman Redman Horsfall, KRR, died of meningitis in the Canadian Hospital, Boulogne, following an operation for an abscess on the brain and chronic inflammation of the middle ear which followed ear trouble.

He was in hospital for ten days and was unconscious for four hours before he died

She was just 18 years old when she married William and therefore had to have consent of her lawfully appointed guardian; it was William Croft who signed his consent on the marriage certificate

At 6:30 pm on 28th April 1812, he and another manufacturer – called Eastwood – were returning from the market in Huddersfield. As they crossed Crosland Moor, Horsfall was shot by 4 Luddites armed with horse pistols. He died 2 days later (30th April) and was buried at St Peter's Church, Huddersfield.

The men disappeared into the woods and a £2,000 reward was offered for their capture.

There were several informers, including an anonymous letter signed V – possibly for Vickerman, the nephew of Francis Vickerman

In January 1813, George Mellor, William Thorpe and Thomas Smith were tried for the murder and were executed 36 hours later

The indictment was that, on 28th April last, Mellor fired a pistol, loaded with bullets &c at Horsfall, by which firing he received a mortal wound on the left side of his belly, of which wound he languished until the 30th April and then died; and that the prisoners were present, aiding and abetting Mellor to commit the said crime, and that the 3 prisoners wilfully murdered William Horsfall.

A fourth man – Benjamin Walker – had been Mellor's chief accomplice and turned King's Evidence for the £2,000 reward.

About 5 o'clock in the morning, while in a state of excitement and delirium, produced by brain fever, and with nothing on but his night clothes, leaped unperceived from the window of his bed-room [at the family home in Underbank, Stansfield], hurried across the turnpike-road, and within 20 yards of his father's door, precipitated himself into the river Calder, which was then much swollen by the late rain that had fallen during the night, and has never since been heard of.

What renders the circumstances more appalling is, the fact that his elder brother Mr John Lister Horsfall had watched him during the night, and necessarily overcome with his fatiguing duty, had lain down and fallen asleep in the same room as his brother, who seizing that opportunity, unfortunately made his escape

He never married.

He lived and died with his family at the Bowling Green, Skircoat. and was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 865] with his parents.

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £1,286, and probate was granted to his brother George Horsfall.

He was an architect [1861] / an architect at 9 Harrison Road, Halifax [1898].

He started as a trainee and then a partner in Horsfall's architecture practice. He established W. H. D. Horsfall.

His work includes

He was a member of Halifax Town Council [1866-1872, 1881-1891].

On 10th October 1882, Halifax Sanitary Committee served a notice upon him, requiring the abatement of a nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the chimney of his works in Winding Road and Lower Wade Street.

On 3rd June 1869, he married Jane Elizabeth Whiteley at Halifax Parish Church.

Wright died 16th October 1883.

Hannah took over at the Spring Gardens [1883].

She died Q2 1896 (aged 68).

The couple were buried at All Saints' Church, Dudwell
