After World War I, Prime Minister David Lloyd George declared that the country must be a land fit for heroes. Part of this was the Housing Act [1919] which triggered off the building of council houses, these were houses built by the local government councils and offered at economic rents. The first of these were built between 1919 and 1921.
As the slums in and around Halifax were cleared after World War II, the occupants were moved to new purpose-built housing estates, these were large groups of council houses.
Some of the early houses were of prefabricated construction.
In the 1980s, it became possible for the tenants to buy the property.
