Hemingway was only partly insured. It was suggested that cotton-waste, which had collected when the building was a mill, had been ignited by a cigarette-end dropped by someone in the balcony

was in the unfortunate habit of drinking, the evil effects of which were more than usually perceptible on him

On the morning of his death, he had risen early and gone to work on the farm, before returning home and killing himself in his room.

At the Inquest, the jury returned a verdict of

fearful and melancholy death

that

the deceased killed himself while in a state of temporary mental derangement

and applied to the Coroner that he allow

the razor, the instrument of death, to be burnt in the fire in the presence of the jury

In 1615, Mrs Crowther and Robert Hemingway died. John was under age and was made ward of the Crown, and his uncle Samuel Lister was appointed guardian to John and his four sisters.

John died still under age, and his four sisters – including Sibel, Phoebe – inherited Shibden Hall.

He was a woolstapler (living at Southowram with his widowed mother and his  siblings) [1881].

He emigrated to Australia.

On 5th September 1900, he married Elizabeth Waters Cuthbertson [1867-1955].


Elizabeth was born in Bacchus Marsh, Moorabool Shire, Victoria, Australia [27th February 1867], the second daughter of James Cuthbertson
 

There are no records of any children.

John Riley died 9th July 1932 (aged 70).

Elizabeth died 5th February 1955 (aged 87).

They both died in Camberwell, Boroondara City, Victoria, Australia & were buried at Burwood Cemetery Burwood, Whitehorse City, Victoria, Australia

He was a member of Park Congregational Sunday School / a member of the Hanover Brotherhood / a foundry clerk [1911] / a clerk with Campbell's Limited.

He was engaged to Amy Harland of Doncaster.

During World War I, he enlisted [4th September 1914], and served as a Sergeant with the 1st/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was wounded by shrapnel [December 1915] and hospitalised in Paris.

He was killed instantaneously after being hit by a piece of shell at Thiepval Wood [4th August 1916].

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France [Grave Ref 6A & 6B], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Park Congregational Church, and on the Memorial at Campbell Gas Engine Company Limited

He sailed from Liverpool, aboard the Cedric, and arrived at Ellis Island, New York [11th July 1914]. He sailed from Bayonne, New Jersey, aboard the SS Beachy, to Florida. Possibly, looking for work in America.

He died of pernicious anaemia at Dr J. A. Simmons Sanatorium, Arcadia, Florida [27th August 1914] (aged 48).

The informant was R. M. Lock, an Englishman who arrived in the US in 1892, and became a contractor for the railroad in Florida which was being built to Arcadia in 1910, and finally opened in 1915.

Samuel is remembered on the family grave at St Anne's Church, Southowram [Grave Ref: R-D3]. Probate records show that he left effects valued at £259.

At the West Riding Assizes, Hemingway was acquitted, & Aspinall was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment

W. Hemingway's Pianoforte Warehouse was at 11 Northgate, Halifax [1899].

He lived with his parents in Chapel Lane, Southowram.

He was employed at Great Acre Quarry, Southowram, and on 24th July 1889, he was working with Brearley Rothery and William Watson. He was fastening a chain round a stone, weighing about 3 tons, and he was reaching under the stone for the chain when the huge block of stone gave way, catching him on the head.

He died minutes later
