He and Sarah Ann Eastwood were living together. On 27th February 1898, he threw Sarah Ann in the canal at Todmorden, then jumped in and held her down by the throat. A passer-by rescued the woman. Hitchin was charged with attempted murder

During World War I, he enlisted in Halifax [1915] for general service but was not called up until 20th November 1916, and joined the 4th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, but was transferred to the 12th Battalion Manchester Regiment where and he served as a Private.

He was killed in action [21st July 1918].
