He was Anne's favourite relative.

His post as ensign with the 2/84th Foot York & Lancaster Regiment was purchased for £400 and gazetted 29th August 1812.

He kept a personal journal covering his travelling to Liverpool and going to join the battalion in Ireland.

He drowned in a bathing accident in the River Blackwater [19th June 1813] whilst he was stationed at Fermoy, County Cork, Eire.

The York Herald, County & General Advertiser [10th July 1813] reported the accident:

On the 19th ult at Fermoy, Samuel Lister Esq of the 84th regiment, age 20, and only son of Jeremy Lister, Esq of Halifax.

The melancholy accident which cut off, in the prime of life, this truly excellent young man, must ever stamp his loss with humble grace upon the hearts of his disconsolate family and friends. He went out with some of his brother officers, to bathe in the Blackwater. Hardly had he plunged in, before the current forced him from his depth. His friends saw him sink, beyond the power of assistance. And Oh! he sunk to raise no more.

Though every exertion was immediately made, the body was not found till it had been two hours under water. All means to restore life proved ineffectual – his sainted spirit had escaped forever.

He had left all those that knew him to lament and say He was the best of sons, of brothers, and of friends and lasting tribute is all the worthy tribute they can pay

He would have inherited the Shibden Hall estate, but his early death meant that it passed to Anne

Lister, WilliamRef 58-97
[1712-1743]
Son of
James Lister.

In December 1736, he sailed to Virginia, following his brothers Thomas and Jeremy

In 1738, he married Susanna Lewis.

The family moved to North Carolina.

William was drowned – along with 2 negro slaves – on 21st October 1743 as he returned from collecting goods which had been sent from Shibden Hall

Lister, WilliamRef 58-102
[1734-1780]
Aka Willy.

Son of Thomas Lister

He was born in Virginia, and was sent over to England, as a boy, by his widowed mother.

He was partly educated by his uncle Rev John Lister head of Bury Grammar School. According to surviving Shibden documents, his uncle was generous in making provision for him as to clothing and immediate needs,

In 1755, Willy moved to London, and took up a post as clerk to an upmarket tailor.

In 1760, he married Margaret Lewes.

Margaret was a native of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire.

They settled in Laugharne

Child: John

William died in 1780.

Margaret died in 1806.

They are buried together in Laugharne churchyard.

It would appear that Willy was unfairly cut out of the Lister family's inheritance, for his uncle Rev John's will of 1759 decreed that his estate should go first to his younger brother James, and if he died without issue, to next brother Samuel. If he too died without issue, Shibden was to go to younger brother Jeremy. Both James and Samuel indeed died unmarried.

Shibden passed to Jeremy.

Willy's long-dead father Thomas had been older than Jeremy, and by right of male primogeniture might be said to have a senior claim on the estate
