On 19th September 1839, Eli came home drunk and had a disagreement with his wife. He told her to go outside, locked the door, and went to bed, taking the key with him. Their son Thomas, who was asleep and awoken by the noise, went to let his mother back into the house. Not being able to find the doorkey, Thomas disturbed Eli who then stabbed Thomas in the thigh and the chest. As Thomas lay dying, Eli ran off.
At the Inquest, the jury found Eli guilty of wilful murder and he was sent for trial at the Spring Assizes.
The Leeds Intelligencer [Saturday 14th March 1840] reported
At the Spring Assizes [11th March 1840], Eli Lumb, charged with killing and slaying Thomas Lumb at Halifax, was placed at the bar, and the Grand Jury having thrown out a bill for manslaughter Mr Knowles said that no evidence would be offered on the charge under Coroner's Inquisition.The prisoner was accordingly acquitted

Lumb had been taken into custody in a state of intoxication, and held at the night asylum, of which Milnes was the keeper.
Inside the gaol, Lumb broke windows and anything else which he could demolish. Milnes tried to remove Lumb's shows, the prevent further damage, but Lumb kicked Milnes in the abdomen, and he died shortly afterwards.
At the trial, witnesses proved that Lumb was of unsound mind, and the Jury returned a verdict of Not Guilty on grounds of insanity, and he was to remain in custody during His Majesty's pleasure

On 21st February 1824, Mally made a bastardy bond to Lot Bottomley, weaver of Sowerby, putative father of her bastard son George, born about 6 weeks ago.
Mally and Lot never married although it was generally known that they were George's parents. It is said that Lot refused, though his reasons are unknown.
In 1851, she was a boarder at 2 Thunderton Lane, which is off Toothill Lane, and very near Little Toothill farm, where Lot Bottomley and George Lumb and family lived.
She died at the Almshouses, Sowerby [20th February 1870]

He was first attracted to Methodism [1775/6], becoming one of the Sowerby Methodists. In 1778, he had a conversion experience. In 1780, he became a local Methodist preacher.
In 1783, he was sent to Barnard Castle as a base for the Dales Circuit.

On 28th July 1823, he, Rev Joshua Fearnside, Rev John Heap, Rev Jagger, Rev John James, Rev Edward B. Lloyd, Rev Zachariah Yewdall and Stephen Wilson of Holmfirth, were amongst the passengers travelling by The Fleece coach from Halifax to Sheffield which overturned near Shepley. Rev Sergeant of Scarborough died of his injuries. Edward Smith, the driver of the coach was accused of
wanton behaviour and shameful perversity, on account of the peril to which his furious driving subjected his passengers.
Rev Lumb suffered slight concussion.

He supported many local charities for underprivileged girls and boys. Moved by the plight of many young boys being sent to the workhouse, he set up a Trust Fund to place them in Industrial Schools so that they could be educated, he found jobs for them and helped them back into society.
His staff included John Barker Kendall and Benjamin Hebden.
In 1850s, he moved to Cheltenham taking with him many of his staff and their families.
He was a great horticulturalist and in May 1860, with the help of Benjamin Hebden, his head gardener, he won the RHS Silver Cup as first prize for 10 azaleas at the Cheltenham Flower Show.

Yesterday afternoon, Sam Lumb, delver, of Chapel House, Moor End, Mount Tabor, met with a shocking accident whilst working at Moor End Quarries. Deceased and his son were working together at a bag? store at the time. They were trying to lay it flat on the ground, when it slipped and came into contact with a crow bar which the elder man had in one hand. Deceased was knocked down, and rolling, he fell into the quarry below. Death ensued shortly afterwards, before the arrival of Dr Ernest Crowther, of Luddenden, who had immediately responded to the urgent call for his services
