On 2nd February 1880, he married Margaret Jane Greenwood [1854-1927] in Todmorden.

The Todmorden Advertiser & Hebden Bridge Newsletter [6th February 1880] reported the wedding

During World War I, he enlisted [September 1914], and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.

He died 30th September 1918 (aged 35).

The Todmorden & District News [5th December 1919] reported


Private Joseph Mills, 240973, 1/6 Lancashire Fusiliers, who was reported wounded and missing on the 30th September 1918, now presumed dead
 

He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium [Grave Ref 54-60 & 163A], in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Oddfellows' Hall, Todmorden
