[1807-18??] In 1830, he was one of a gang of four men who robbed William Kitson.

They were all sentenced to death, but this was later commuted to transportation.

The men were received aboard the Prison hulk Ship Retribution moored at Woolwich [2nd May 1830].

The Retribution was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line launched as HMS Edgar and converted to a Prison Hulk ship in 1813. She was renamed Retribution in 1814, and was broken up in 1836

Aboard the Retribution, the conduct of Daniel Maude was said to be bad.

They were all aboard the Lord Melville (3) when she departed from Sheerness [around 20th May 1830], carrying 176 male convicts and also a guard detachment of the 17th Regiment of Foot, possibly calling at the Downs, England and departing from there [6th June 1830], and after 137 days arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney Cove [21st October 1830].

The Lord Melville (3) (425 tons) was built in Quebec, Canada in 1825. She had made a previous voyage to Australia in 1829. She was wrecked in 1836 with some loss of life

He was a worsted spinner of West Vale.

On Saturday, 31st July 1875, he was found dead on the roof of the Huddersfield-Bradford train after it had passed under a bridge at Bradley. His hat was found at Bradley.

The inquest recorded that – although he was sober – he had climbed on the train when he found the carriage-doors locked, and had been struck on the forehead by projecting stones on a low bridge.

The Leeds Times of 15th August 1853 reported


HE'LL NOT DO SO AGAIN

On Saturday [13th August 1853], Isaac Maude, of Greetland, farmer, was charged by Mary Brooke, the wife of Joseph Brooke, with having on Easter Monday, pulled a hook out of a wall and let her clothes-line down; after which, for some whim or other, he trampled upon the clothes. In defence, he alleged that the line was hung across a fold over which the public had right of road; but it was proved that the fold is private property, and that defendant had done the act out of spite.

He was fined, penalty and costs 49/-

In 1911, he was living with his mother Betsy and stepfather Fred Marsden at 58 Woodside View, Haley Hill, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [7th September 1914], and he served as a Corporal with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was wounded at Hill 60 [April 1916].

He was killed in action at Les Boeufs, Somme [12th October 1916].

The Halifax Courier [16th December 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France [Grave Ref VI AA 3].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.

His brother Private Albert Maude was captured at the Battle of Mons, and held in a German prison camp from 5th September 1914
