At a meeting of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company in September 1834, he caused some amusement by advocating the construction of a branch line from Salterhebble to Huddersfield at a cost of some £300,000 on the grounds that he had a mill on the line and the warehouse would be a valuable adjunct at the station.

On 3rd August 1825, he married (1) Elizabeth Walker [1806-184?] in Elland.

On 6th November 1855, he married (2) Mary Ann Shaw, daughter of Ely Wilkinson, at Elland Parish Church.

An unemployed labourer of Clement Street, Pellon Lane.

He had been dismissed from his job at Shaw's mineral water plant for taking a half-day off work to watch a football match.

Towards the end of 1909, he met Annie Quick and they fell in love.

Annie was pregnant and they were planning to marry. Joseph had lost his job and was having difficulty finding work. He had told his father that he would kill himself if he could not find work.

In April 1910, the couple travelled to Barnsley where they committed suicide by swallowing poison.

He was buried at Stoney Royd Cemetery alongside Annie

On 3rd October 1825, he married Ann Hughlings at Halifax Parish Church.
