Local Railways & Railway stations
This SideTrack
presents some details of the Railways and Railway
Stations which served – and still serve – the Calderdale district.
The line from Manchester, through the Calder Valley, to Normanton
(near Wakefield), is one of the oldest passenger lines in Britain,
having been approved by Parliament in 1836, and the Halifax &
Calderdale district is well-supported by the railway service.
In 1963, a report entitled The Reshaping of British Railways,
produced by chairman Dr Richard Beeching, signalled the closure of a
quarter of the country's rail lines and 2,128 stations in addition to
the scrapping of 67,700 jobs
