Royal visits to Calderdale

Members of the Royal family have visited the district on many occasions.

Notable visits were those on

• 1809 when Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester, nephew of George III, visited the district
• 3rd August 1863 when the Prince of Wales – later Edward VII – opened Halifax Town Hall
• 22nd May 1907 when Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll – daughter of Queen Victoria – came to open the Brighouse Art Gallery
• 10th July 1912 when George V and Queen Mary visited Brighouse and Halifax
• 15th October 1926 when Princess Mary came to open a new maternity unit at the Royal Halifax Infirmary
• 21st September 1931 when Princess Mary came to open the Princess Mary High School
• February 1933 when Princess Mary came to open the Eliza & Jane Simpson Isolation ward and the Princess Royal ward at the Royal Halifax Infirmary
• 20th October 1937 when George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the district
• 26th July 1949 when Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip made their first visit to Halifax
• 1950 when Princess Mary came to open new YMCA headquarters at the Marlborough Hall
• 1958 when Princess Margaret visited Halifax
• 20th May 1960 when Princess Mary came to open extensions to Elland Grammar School
• 1961 when Princess Mary came to open an extension to the Meredith & Drew works
• October 1971 when the Queen opened the M62 and the Scammonden Reservoir
• 13th November 1974 when the Queen came to Halifax to open the new Halifax Building Society headquarters
• 1990 when Princess Margaret visited Halifax
• 9th July 1992 when Prince Charles formally opened Eureka! and visited the Square Chapel Arts Centre
• 15th March 2004 when Princess Anne performed the official opening ceremony of the Calderdale Royal Hospital
• 27th May 2004 when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Halifax High School, Halifax Town Hall, and exhibitions at the Piece Hall
