Savile, LeonardRef 60-87
[14??-1525]
Of Hullenedge.

Son & heir of Sir John Savile of Hullenedge.

He married Joan (also called Jennet).

Child: Thomas

When Leonard knew that he was dying he took the following action:

1 Sept. 1523. Indenture. Guardianship deed Leonard Savile of Eland son and heir of John of Hollyngage to Thomas Savile of Bothomehall, gent., Thomas son and heir of Leonard Savile.

[Nott Arch DD/SR/207/626]

Leonard last appears in documents in mid 1525. In November that year, his younger brother John, now esquire, was in possession of Hullenedge Hall:

1525, 24 Nov. Indenture lease: John Savile of Holingedge esq and son Leonard to Thomas Savile of Denton, Hullyngage Hall and lands. Eland

[Nott Arch DD/SR/207/640]

His widow, Joan, remarried, as can be seen from this document:

1555/6 Mar 7. Indenture lease John [Joan] Hyde, widow of Christopher Hyde of Stainforth, a late widow of Leonard Savile, to her son Thomas Savile, all her lands and messuages in Elland, Stainland and Greetland

Savile, Long HarryRef 60-89

Savile, Margaret deRef 60-86
[13??-13??]

Written: de Seyvill

She was Prioress of Kirklees Priory, though the exact dates are lost.

Watson in his History of Halifax [p 210] said:

Sir John [de Savile] married Jane, daughter of Matthew de Bosco (alias Wood) by whom, John, and Margaret, Prioress of Kirklees, 32 Edw III [1358-9].

John married Margery, daughter and coheiress of Henry Rishworth, of Rishworth, in Halifax Parish, esquire

Watson copied the above from a pedigree written by Ralph Thoresby in his Ducatus Leodiensis [1715]. It may be so, though no original evidence has been found to support it. It seems more likely, if she was Prioress in 1358, that she was the next generation = the daughter, not the sister, of Sir John Savile of Golcar and Rishworth

Savile Family PedigreesRef 60-11

There are 18 pedigrees for the Saviles including the Savile families of Thornhill, Hullenedge, Elland, Newhall, Golcar, Bradley & Methley.

The image shows an extract from one such Savile Pedigree in Thoresby's Ducatus Leodiensis [p. 113].

Sir John Savile of Golcar, and Rishworth by marriage, is the first member of the family from whom we can, using documentary evidence, establish lineage

J. W. Clay writes:

The early history of the Saviles is clouded in mystery.

In the Elizabethan times, when every family wished to trace their origin as far back as possible, genealogists tried to claim a descent from the Savelli, an Italian family. This idea cannot be entertained.

Mr Joseph Hunter FSA says

The family, like others of those which are now accounted the best and most ancient families in England, began early with small possessions, probably in the parish of Silkstone
