He became a statesman, politician and essayist.
He was a wealthy baronet, 4th Baronet Savile of Thornhill. He entered politics in the 1660s and supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War. He was a protestant, but a loyal supporter of the Stuart cause. On the death of Cromwell, he declared himself in favour of the absent king. At the Restoration, he was created Baron Savile of Eland and Viscount Halifax [1667], the 1st Earl of Halifax (First Creation) [1679], Keeper of the Privy Seal, and the 1st Marquis of Halifax [1682]
He wrote several works, including a book entitled The Miscellanies about the social life and customs of Britain which was published by Robert Urie of Glasgow [1751].
In 1656, he married (1) Lady Dorothy Spencer [1640-1670].

Independent Whig MP for Yorkshire. He was one of the largest landowners in the district.
He was president of the Halifax Union Club. He took a prominent part in the formation of the Calder & Hebble Navigation Company. He was a subscriber to the publication of Watson's History.
He visited Royds' House, Halifax on many occasions, and may have given his name to George Square.
In 1756, he and Charles Watson-Wentworth established the Regiment which became the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
He never married.
The male line of the Savile family ended when he died [10th January 1784].

His body was carried through Wakefield and sumptuously buried at Thornhill

A politician who became the MP for Lincolnshire in 1586, the Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1600. He was made a knight of the shire for York in the years 1597, 1614, 1624, and 1626. He was Custos Rotulorum of the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was ejected from office in 1615, but reappointed in 1626. He became a privy councillor, and the comptroller of the household, 1627-30. In 1627, he was created Baron Savile

When Leonard knew that he was dying he took the following action:

Leonard last appears in documents in mid 1525. In November that year, his younger brother John, now esquire, was in possession of Hullenedge Hall:

Watson copied the above from a pedigree written by Ralph Thoresby in his Ducatus Leodiensis [1715]. It may be so, though no original evidence has been found to support it. It seems more likely, if she was Prioress in 1358, that she was the next generation = the daughter, not the sister, of Sir John Savile of Golcar and Rishworth

No children are mentioned in his will, but, from the wording, it is possible that he had married daughters.
The will of his brother, Henry, and a Wakefield Manor Roll entry of the period refer to Thomas Sayvell and his heirs, but then, that is standard wording

A member of the Savile family of Thornhill and 3rd Baronet Savile of Thornhill. He was the largest landowner in Halifax parish. He succeeded his older brother who died young.
On 29th December 1629, he married Anne at Thornhill.
Anne was the eldest daughter of Thomas, Lord Coventry

During the Civil War, he was a commander in the Royalist army and was deputy to Major Thomas Beaumont. Thornhill Hall was destroyed by the Parliamentarians and the family moved to Rufford Abbey.

The first member of this branch of the family was Henry de Savile, who married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Simon de Thornhill, and brought the Thornhill family lands to the marriage.
At this time, the Saviles moved into Thornhill Hall, which had been the seat of the Thornhill family, and now became the seat of this branch of the Savile family.
Henry's grandson, Sir John Savile was steward of the Manor of Wakefield.
There remained a close relationship between the Saviles of Hullenedge and the main line of the family now living in Thornhill.
The Baronetcy – Baronet Savile of Thornhill – was created in 1611.
