The Bradford Daily Argus [21st December 1921] reported


Harry Town, licensee of the Lower George Hotel, Halifax, was found by his wife Rhoda, hanging from a beam in the hotel stables this morning.

He had been in his usual good health and spirits, and got up at 6 am, as was his custom. At 8 am, when his wife got downstairs, she could not find him. Going into the stables near the hotel, she made the discovery. Assistance was procured, but death had taken so long before that the body was cold

FINANCIAL WORRY AND SUICIDE

Depression owing to financial matters was mentioned as a reason for Harry Town having hanged himself. The Inquest was held today, and his wife Rhoda Town who made the discovery, said that for some time he had been worried financially. A verdict was entered Hanged himself

Hubert Henry Town, a motor driver of Halifax, was one of a number of drivers accused of failing to illuminate their rear identification plates. He was fined £2 (or 28 days) 
 

The Halifax Evening Courier [18th October 1938] reported an accident on 4th October 1938, in which


Motorist Hubert Henry Town, of Thrum Hall Lane, knocked down Mrs Anne Baxendale (aged 77), of 4 Allerton Place, Halifax. Her right leg was injured, and Mr Town took her home, but, finding that she lived alone, he took her to the Infirmary. She died there on 17th October 1938

During World War I, he served as a Private / Bomber with the 1st/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed instantaneously when a shell exploded in his dugout [3rd July 1916].

The Halifax Courier [15th July 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval, France [Grave Ref XII J 3].

A memorial service was held at Coley Church [16th July 1916].

He is remembered on Coley War Memorial.

He was a woolcomber [1851] / a traveller for the spice-making business of Joseph Bateman at  Northgate, Halifax [1859] / a carter (with a pony & cart) [1861] / a warehouseman [1871] / beerseller at the Prince of Wales Tavern, 41 Haley Hill, Northowram  [1881] / a retired grocer [1891].

In July 1859, Bateman accused Town of embezzling goods. Town was suspected of falsely accounting for spices which he weighed out. The Magistrates felt that the case was insufficiently clear and dismissed the accused.

In 1837, he married (1) Mary Speak [1812-1868] in Halifax.
