wife, Fanny, were walking to Halifax railway station on their
way back home to Elland, when they saw 2 policemen – employees of the
Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company – apprehending a man whom
they alleged to be drunk.
Mr Thornton told Hughes, one of the policemen, that he did not
believe the man was drunk and that he ought to let him go.
As Mr and Mrs Thornton were walking to the Booking Office, Hughes
arrested them both and placed them in the cells at Halifax Police
Station.
On the 21st December, Mr and Mrs Thornton were charged with wilfully
obstructing Hughes in the discharge of his duty.
The case was dismissed.
In August 1897, 2 cases were brought for false imprisonment and
malicious prosecution:
