Judge James Stansfeld

Judge James Stansfeld was born in Leeds, son of David Stansfeld.

He became a Halifax lawyer.

He was

• Articled to James Wigglesworth [from 1807 to 1812]
• In partnership with Wigglesworth and James Thompson  [1815 to 1822]
• In partnership with James Thompson and W. B. Thompson  as Thompson, Stansfeld & Thompson [1822 to 1831]
• In partnership with William Craven [1832 to 1841]
• Judge of the Court of Requests [1841 to 1847]
• Consular agent of the United States of America [1845]
• At 2 Waterhouse Street, Halifax [1845]
• Appointed the First Judge of Halifax County Court [12th May 1847]
• Judge of the County Court at Halifax, Huddersfield, Todmorden  and Holmfirth [1851]

• President of the Halifax Mechanics' Institute

In 1817, he married Emma Ralph.

Children:

2. Emma [1818-30/1/1870] who never married, & was buried  with her mother
3. Sarah Woolrich [b 1821]
4. Maria [1824-27th February 1904] who married Rev Francis  England Millson
5. Ellen [b 1828] who married James Nixon Porter
6. Sophia [1830-1891] who married (1) Rev Percy Bakewell and (2) Alfred Moffatt
7. Mary [b 1833]

The family lived at

• 1 Aked's Road, Halifax
• Wards Hall where their son, James, was born  [1820]
• Green Bank, Halifax [1841, 1845, 1851]
• Moorfield / Moorlands, Skircoat [1861, 1871, 1872]

Living with them [in 1871] were grandchildren Elizabeth Sudworth Porter [b 1867] & William Porter [b 1868] and visitor Ellen Hall Porter [b 1851]

Martha Baines was nurse & servant for the family [for 38 years].

Emma died 7th January 1851 (aged 58).

She was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 187] with her daughter Emma

James died 29th January 1872.

He was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 185] with his daughter Maria & her husband Rev Francis England Millson.

Probate records show that he left effects valued at under £70,000.

Probate was granted to his son James.
