Mrs Sunderland Competition [1891]

The Third Mrs Sunderland took place at the Huddersfield Technical School on 10th April 1891.

The judges were Mr John North, Mr D. W. Evans, and Mr J. H. Pearson FCO.

50 entries were received – 19 sopranos, 5 contraltos and 26 pianists, of whom 29 contestants appeared

• The pianists were heard first.

  The set piece for the pianists was Mendelssohn's Andante and Rondo Capriccioso Section 4, No. 16, Hallé's School. Those whom the judges considered best, were then asked to perform their own chosen piece. The names or aliases* of the contestants were:

  The vocal prize was shared by Student* (Miss Sylvia Frances Wardell of Wath-on-Dearne) and Agatha Grant* (Miss Margaret A. Kay of Keighley) who each received the Silver Medal and half of the 5 guineas prize. The judges highly commended the singing of Miss Pattie Cuttle and Miss Emily A. Greenwood
