Raspberry Passage, WarleyRef 19-2581
The popular name for an alley leading off from the centre of Warley Town, between Nos 17 & 18 Warley Town.

There have been several suggestions for the origin of the name

  • that a lady who lived there in Victorian times was known for her home-made raspberry jam
  • that there was a dye-house there and the water from the dyeing of red military uniforms often flowed down the alley

The name – and the form Rotten Row – is found in many parts of Britain, and may be derived from a reference to an infestation of rats in the area. Another possibility is that it is a form of Routine Row, referring to the Catholic ritual of carrying the elements of the Mass around the streets near the church
