Joseph Frederick Walsh



The architect Joseph Frederick Walsh was born at Thornhill, Hipperholme, the son of John Walsh.

In 1877, he was articled to his uncle Richard Horsfall.

He was an architect & land surveyor (own account) [1901] / an architect & land surveyor (employer) [1911].

He was influenced by the conservation work of John Lister.

Some of his work was in the Arts & Crafts style.

In 1890, he remodelled several buildings – including Cripplegate, House at the Maypole, and the former Turk's Head Inn.

In 1891, he designed the Boar's Head Hotel as a part of the Halifax Borough Market.

His use of turned stone led to a dispute with local quarriers.

In 1913, he was one of the subscribers to The Old Halls & Manor Houses of Yorkshire

He became the company architect for Whitaker's Brewery. His other work included pubs, breweries and Board Schools:

Minnie Rose was born in Halifax, the daughter of John Arthur Thwaite

  2. Margaret Anne [b 1895] who was a boarder at the Ladies'  College, Clarence Drive, Harrogate [1911]
  3. George [b 1899]

The family lived at

Minnie Rose died in Halifax [Q4 1945] (aged 78).

Joseph Frederick died in Halifax [Q3 1950] (aged 89)
