Nathan Whitley was born in Huddersfield [23rd February 1830], the son of John Whitley.
The family were great benefactors and dedicated to public service.
He worked as a carpet weaver, at the Halifax Union Bank, and in his grandfather's business, John Whiteley & Sons. He became a partner in, and took over management at, S. Whitley & Company at Hanson Lane Mills after the death of his brother Samuel. He was a Governor of Heath Grammar School [1880]
He held several public offices, including a Director of Halifax Mechanics' Institute [1862], Secretary of the committee to erect the statue of the Prince Consort [1862], a member of Halifax Town Council [1873-1877, 1881-1884], Mayor of Halifax [1876-1877] and [1881-1883], Magistrate [1878], a Governor of Crossley & Porter Orphanage, a Governor of Heath Grammar School, a Deacon of Park Congregational Church, Halifax, and an officer of the Halifax Charity Organisation Society [1887].
In 1864, he married (1) Sarah Rinder [1831-1869] in Leeds.
Sarah, the daughter of William Rinder, came from Gledhowe Grove, Leeds

Sarah died 6th November 1869 (aged 38), following the birth of their 5th child Samuel Rinder.
She was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 455].
In 1873, Nathan married (2) Lucy Delf of Buckhurst Hill, Essex, in West Ham.

Probate records show that he left a personal estate valued at £136,401 18/1d.
The will was proved by sons John Henry & Alfred William, James Malcolm Bowman, and Henry Whitworth of West Royd, Halifax (cotton spinner).
Members of the family were buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 456]
