John Whitley JP was born in Huddersfield [29th October 1827].
He was the eldest surviving son of John Whitley.
He lived at 11 Winding Road, Halifax with his unmarried sister, Mary Anne [1851].
He was a cotton card maker and entered his grandfather's business, John Whiteley & Sons.
He became a partner in 1850 and retired from the business in 1888.
He held many public offices including Magistrate, Chairman of Crossley & Porter Orphanage, Governor of Abbott's Ladies' Home, Treasurer and a Governor of the Royal Halifax Infirmary, Trustee of Francis Crossley's Almshouses, Margaret Street, Trustee of Joseph Crossley's Almshouses, Arden Road, Trustee of Somerscale's Charity, and Trustee of Bowcock's Charity. He was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough in 1907.
In 1852, he married Jessie Mckeand [1829-1895].
Jessie was born in Glasgow, the daughter of a Glasgow merchant

The family lived at West House, Halifax [1871, 1901].
Jessie died 9th March 1895 (aged 66).
Jessie is remembered at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 541].
John died at West House on his 85th birthday [29th October 1912].
The couple & the children ‡ were buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 454].

In 1913, the 4 youngest daughters - Florence, Eleanor Maude, Mary Anne, and Frances Louisa - gave West House to Halifax Corporation, in accordance with their father's wishes. They then went to live at Green Lea, Savile Park and in 1920, they were at Number 11 Heath Avenue
