To the sheriff of Yorkshire, and the bailiffs, ministers and other faithful men in the county of Yorkshire. Appointment of Richard le Scrope, Walter de Urswick and John de Saville to choose, inspect and array 200 archers in the county of Yorkshire, both within the liberties and without, selecting them from the better, more suitable and stronger archers of that county, and bring them, suitably equipped with bows & arrows and other arms according to their status, to the port of Southampton by Monday the morrow of the octave of Trinity next, ready and prepared to set out to Aquitaine in the king's service and at his wages in the company of John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster, to stay there with Edward of Woodstock, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, for the safety and defence of the king's lordships and rights. They are also granted full power to arrest anyone who opposes them, and commit them to the king's prison, to stay there until the king decides their punishment. On 10th July 1396, he founded a chantry at Elland church by licence,
to pray for John, Duke of Aquitaine and Lancaster, Sir John Sayvill and Isabella his wife and their children, Henry, late Earl of Lancaster, John Sayvill and Margaret his wife, the parents of the said Sir John, Thomas de Eland and Joan his wife, parents of the said Isabella.[Chantry Surveys, Surtees Soc. ii, 298]
His will was undated, proved 23 July 1399:
He wished to be buried at Elland. He gave a number of legacies to various people and to his tenants at Golcar and Tankersley. John Savile of Shelley was executor.[copy in Halifax Wills, ii, 216]
On 17th November 1399, in the chapel within the manor of Newstead, near the Priory of St Oswalds' of Nostell,
William, Bishop of Pharos, the suffragan of the archbishop, received the vow of chastity of Isabella, widow of Sir John Saville, knt., and gave her the ring and mantle.[Reg. Scrope, 21a]
