Rev Samuel Knight



Rev Samuel Knight MA. was born in Halifax, the eldest son of Titus Knight.

He was baptised at Square Chapel, Halifax [27th December 1749] by Rev Dr George Legh who at first refused because he thought that the child had died.

He was educated at Hipperholme Grammar School. He was a Fellow of Magdalene College Cambridge and vicar of Humberston in Lincolnshire before becoming Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Halifax [1798] and Vicar of Halifax [1817-1827].

He published popular devotional manuals, including Forms of Prayers for the use of Christian Families published by N. Whitley [1829]. His son, James, edited [1828] 2 volumes of Samuel's sermons and other writings.

Anne Lister studied arithmetic, geometry, mechanics, rhetoric, Latin and Greek with him.

He married Frances [1767-1832].

Children:

  1. James [1793-183] who became a writer of religious texts
  2. William

He was buried at Halifax Parish Church

The epitaph on his memorial is recorded in the book Monumental & Other Inscriptions
