Obituary : Frederick Lee



The Todmorden Advertiser & Hebden Bridge Newsletter [9th July 1926] published an obituary of Frederick Lee


Mr Frederick Lee of Faversham, Kent, died aged 76. He formerly lived in Woodlands Avenue, Todmorden, and was the proprietor of the Todmorden Advertiser.

He was the fourth son of John Lee, shoemaker of Cheapside.

He married Sarah Ann Wrigley, daughter of John Wrigley, when he was 21.

In December 1899 he and his brother acquired the Todmorden Advertiser from Richard Chambers. The partnership was dissolved in 1907 and Frederick carried on as sole proprietor. He sold the paper in 1919.

He and his wife then moved to Faversham, Kent, for their retirement. His children are Nurse Emma Lee, Bertha Lee, Mr J. P. Lee, Walter Lee and Fred H. Lee.

He was born at Bank Top on the 11th of April 1850.

Started work as a doffer at Waterside Mill aged 8. Joined the Advertiser as an errand boy in 1860. He began his reporting career in his teens. He was appointed foreman and manager at the age of 19. He was later made editor too.

He was a competent all-round musician, being a capable performer on the violin, piano and organ.

He joined the Prince George Lodge of Freemasons in 1902 and was master of the lodge in 1912
