Thefts from Rochdale Parish Church
[1779]

A newspaper of 19th August 1779 reported

Rochdale Parish Church was broken into by some wicked and evil disposed person or persons, and one silver cup, four surplices, one Doctor in Divinity's Hood, the Parish Clerk's Gown and a plain scarlet curtain (upwards of six yards long and about one yard broad) were from hence stolen and taken away.

The Parish Churchwardens promise a reward of five guineas to any person or persons who shall discover and make known the said offenders

This story has some similarities to that of Joseph Bailey, Tom Bell, Mr Tattersall & the Hermit of Hathershelf
