
In the mid-19th century, national and local newspapers published several cases of theft from the shop of Henry Blakey in Halifax.
The Leeds Intelligencer [26th December 1846] reported
STEALING CLOTHES – On Tuesday, Robert Thompson, a nut hawkers, was charged before Halifax Magistrates, by Police Officer Rawson, with stealing a waistcoat from the shop of Mr Henry Blakey, in Market Street, Halifax, on Saturday [20th December 1846].The man was also charged with picking the pockets of two married women in the Market Place, but the evidence being deemed defective, only the first case was case was gone into.
The same day, Spiers put a woman into the dock on a charge of stealing two coats, also from Mr Blakey's shop, on Monday, She gave her name as Julia Manning, and stated that her husband was a private soldier The case being quite clear against her, she was committed to the House of Correction for trial at the next sessions, as was also the prisoner Thompson
The Leeds Times [9th January 1857] reported the proceedings at the West Riding Michaelmas Sessions at Knaresborough on 7th January 1857. Local cases were included:
Julia Manning, aged 24, was to be imprisoned for four calendar months for stealing a coat at Halifax, the property of Henry Blakey.Robert Thompson, aged 26, was to be imprisoned for three calendar months for stealing a silk waistcoat at Halifax, the property of Henry Blakey
The Weekly Times & Echo of London [9th September 1849] reported the case of William Halstead of Stainland, who had been brought at London's Guildhall, charged with stealing a pocket-book containing ten five-pound notes, the property of Mr Richard Roberts, a manufacturer of Lower-Head Row. Other crimes were mentioned in the report:
On 2nd September 1849, [this] William Halstead, went to the shop of Mr Henry Blakey, in Halifax, where he purchased a coat for £1 12/6d, giving in payment a £5 note of the Yorkshire District Bank. He later went to two more shops in Halifax – Mrs Margaret Wright of 37 Woolshops, where he bought a hat and a cap (for 9s), and Mr Holland of 13 Old Market, where he purchased a velveteen jacket, fancy waistcoat, and a pair of cloth trousers for £1 12/8d – on each occasion, paying with £5 notes
