During World War I, he served as a Private with the 1st/6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.

He was one of the first men to go from the town. He went to the Dardanelles and was wounded on 8th May 1915.

He went to France in February 1917.

He was killed in action [6th September 1917], during an attack on German positions.

The Todmorden & District News [28th September 1917] published an account of his death, and his photograph appeared in the edition of 5th October 1917.

He was buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium [Grave Ref VIII A 17].

On Sunday, 3rd July 1898, the bodies of Leah and 14-month-old son Nathaniel were found floating in the canal near Edwards Canal Mills, Sowerby Bridge. Her behaviour had changed following an incident 4 years earlier, in which she had been hit on the head during a quarrel with her sister. On the night of her suicide, she had been upset when her husband complained that she had not mended his clothes, and she ran off with the child.

At the Inquest, a verdict of suicide was returned

        He was educated locally and at the Royal College of Science London  [1874-1879] / a commercial clerk [1871] / an author and teacher in chemistry [1881] / an analyst [1891] / public analyst for Halifax [1886, 1901] / Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry, the Chemical Society, the  Physical Society of London.

        He wrote many articles and other works

        • Science for All
        • Moorland Waters
        • Absorption of Röntgen Rays
        • Salt Circulation
        • The Old Light and the New

        for the British Association, the Geological Magazine and other scientific publications.

        In 1893, he married Sarah Jane Hibbins [1865-19??] in Loughborough.

        They lived at 9 Grandsmere Place, Halifax [1901].

        He died at Grandsmere Place [9th May 1905].

        Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £1,345. Probate was granted to his widow Sarah

        Son of Mary Elizabeth (née Hunsworth) [1870-1956] & Samuel Ackroyd [1865-1936], house painter, of 232 Queens Road, Halifax [1911].

        Born in Halifax.

        He was employed by Driver's Stores of Northgate.

        During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment).

        He died in France [23rd August 1918].

        He is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France [Grave Ref 3], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Halifax Bowling Club
